A KEY reason that Russia wanted to take over Ukraine, was RESOURCES. Russia's population is in freefall, and adding all of the Ukrainians, who were to welcome the Russian Army, would have helped Russia immensely. Other resources were the minerals/metals/oil/gas in Eastern Ukraine. Other resources were the oil/gas in offshore Ukrainian waters. Another KEY Ukrainian resource is the ONLY deepwater port in the Black Sea, Sevastopol.
